Colombia Justice Reform and Modernization Program (2005-2009)

CAJ was awarded a $19.7 million contract over four years from USAID for the implementation of Colombia's new Criminal Procedure Code; strengthening and organizing the Public Defense System; creation of a victims service center for victims of violent crimes, adaptation of court administration to new accusatorial procedures (e.g. criminal notifications by e-mail and establishment of virtual courtrooms in conflict areas to connect local police, prosecutors, public defenders and their clients with judges in large urban centers); establishment of 18 alternative dispute resolution and 21 justice houses (casas de justicia) in remote conflict areas and; promotion of civil society participation in judicial reform through formation of coalitions for advocacy and citizen’s oversight projects.
